Yashasvi Jaiswal replaces injured Kohli for Afghanistan ODIs
After suffering a hamstring injury during the recently concluded Indian Premier League, Virat Kohli has been ruled out of the three-match One-Day International series against Afghanistan. His replacement for the series, which begins on June 13, is Yashasvi Jaiswal.
During the announcement of India's teams for the upcoming Twenty20 International series, chief selector Ajit Agarkar confirmed the development. Agarkar also remained optimistic of Kohli's chances of featuring in the England ODIs that will be played mid-July. "At this point, Virat's injury occurred less than a week ago during the (IPL) finals. "The timelines are still unknown," Agarkar stated. "However, he appears to be fit for that England one-day series. Don't hold me to it because it's not a definitive response. The physical therapist hasn't given me a precise timetable yet.
Kohli was in blazing form in the IPL, scoring 675 runs at a strike rate of 165.85 - his best in the IPL - to help RCB retain their IPL crown. In his most recent ODI appearance six months ago, Jaiswal, who is not a regular for India in the 50-over format, scored an unbeaten century against South Africa.
Devajith Saikia, secretary of the BCCI, said that Hardik Pandya and Rohit Sharma's fitness clearances are needed before they can play in the ODI series. Saikia said, "Hardik is in CoE Bengaluru." He is participating in a rehabilitation program. He will soon go for the final test, and he'll be in the process of clearance. Rohit will also visit the CoE in the next two to three days. We are waiting for their final fitness certification."
Agarkar confirmed that the all-rounder's immediate focus is the 50-over format in preparation for the ODI World Cup in 2027 in light of Hardik's absence from the three T20I squads announced on June 6.
Before traveling to Lucknow and Chennai for the second and final matches on June 17 and 20, respectively, the teams will play the first one-day international against Afghanistan on June 13.
