USA overwhelms Netherlands with Mukkamalla's ton, Harmeet's bowling
USA pulled off a stunning 93-run win over Netherlands in the T20 World Cup, thanks to Saiteja Mukkamalla's 79 and Harmeet Singh's four-for. Mukkamalla's explosive batting, featuring 5 fours and 4 sixes, anchored USA's 196/6. Harmeet's spell, including 4/21, dismantled Netherlands, who were bowled out for 103.
The USA's batting onslaught in Chennai began with openers Shayan Jahangir and Monank Patel setting the tone for boundaries. Saiteja Mukkamalla's explosive 79 off 51 balls propelled USA's innings, with the run rate nearly touching 10 an over. Shubham Ranjane's aggressive batting in the death overs sealed a formidable total, making it the highest Netherlands had faced in a T20 World Cup.
USA's spinners then put the pressure on Netherlands from the get-go. Once Nosthush Kenjige struck in the second over, Harmeet ran through them once he came on in the powerplay to finish with 4 for 21, his second four-for in T20Is.
USA's top order showed intent from the get-go! Shayan Jahangir went big early, pulling two sixes in the first over, despite captain Monank's instructions to be cautious. Monank himself joined in, keeping the run rate soaring with a straight drive to the fence.
Mukkamalla similarly went for the big hits almost right from the start. He fearlessly went aerial again and again, starting with a six off left-arm quick Fred Klaassen, and didn't take the foot off the pedal even after the powerplay. There was no respite for Netherlands despite several bowling changes as USA kept punishing the loose balls, and traded in singles and doubles against the good ones which gave the experienced Roelof van der Merwe figures of 3-0-36-0 without a single dot ball.
Saiteja Mukkamalla, just 21, dazzled with mature strokeplay, hitting sixes in all directions against pace and spin. His elegance at the crease was impressive, earning praise from captain Monank. Meanwhile, Monank himself belted three fours and a six before falling to Bas de Leede's knuckleball.
Mukkamalla exploded with four fours in five balls, taking his score from 25 off 20 to a blazing 50 off 30 balls! He smashed a six over covers off Klein, showcasing his dominance. Shubham Ranjane joined him, and together they kept the boundaries rolling.
Fresh off his quickfire 51 against Pakistan when he took down Shaheen Shah Afridi, Ranjane showed his range of strokes behind the wicket as the Netherlands quicks refused to offer any pace with their range of cutters. That got them two boundary-less overs, the 16th and 17th, as they went for just 12 runs, including Mukkamalla's wicket for 79.
Netherlands' batting struggled against USA's bowlers, with Nosthush Kenjige getting Michael Levitt out in the second over with a low-keeping ball. Harmeet Singh then took consecutive wickets, including Max O'Dowd and Bas de Leede, reducing Netherlands to 53/4. Harmeet's 4/21 was crucial in restricting Netherlands to 103, leading to USA's 93-run win.
USA 196 for 6 (Mukkamalla 79, Ranjane 48*, de Leede 3-37) beat Netherlands 103 (de Leede 23, Harmeet 4-21, van Schalkwyk 3-21) by 93 runs
