Urvil Patel equals record for fastest fifty in IPL history

Urvil Patel, a batsman for Chennai Super Kings (CSK), broke the IPL record for the fastest fifty by scoring a half-century in 13 balls against Lucknow Super Giants at Chepauk. He shares the record with Yashasvi Jaiswal, who scored 98 not out against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens in IPL 2023 with a half-century off 13 balls. Patel's half-century was also the second-fastest in all of T20 cricket. Dipendra Singh Airee of Nepal holds the record for the fastest fifty in T20 cricket. In the 2023 Asian Games, he defeated Mongolia by scoring a half-century in nine balls. In the 2023-24 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Ashutosh Sharma made an 11-ball fifty for Railways against Arunachal Pradesh, and Yuvraj Singh, Chris Gayle, Hazratullah Zazai, Sahil Chauhan, and Abhishek Sharma have all made 12-ball fifties. Patel stated after the game, "The coaches told me to hold my shape and hit the ball well." "Just recently, Rutu [Gaikwad] informed me that the wicket is a little low and that I should be prepared for it. He simply asked me to play the way I did, saying little else." Patel, 27, made 50 off 13 balls after starting his innings with CSK 45 for 1 in 3.4 overs in a 204-run chase. He then hit seven sixes and a four. "This is for you, Papa" was written on a piece of paper that he pulled out to mark the occasion. With two fours and eight sixes, Patel was eventually run out for 65 in 23 balls, putting CSK on 126 for 2 in 9.2 overs. CSK achieved their first 180+ chase victory in 15 attempts in the IPL thanks to his knock. They are currently fifth in the points table with 12 points from 10 games. Patel, 27, was only playing in his fourth IPL 2026 match. He got the chance only after CSK lost Ayush Mhatre to a hamstring injury. In his first three innings, he scored 4, 24, and 17 runs.
