Tributes Pour in as Former Zimbabwe Player and Match Official Sarah Dambanevana Dies at Age 36

Passing and Hospitalization: Sarah Dambanevana passed away in Harare on October 12, 2026, at the age of 36. She had spent months receiving medical care in the hospital following a surgical procedure in March.

Playing Career: Before stepping into officiating, Dambanevana represented Zimbabwe as a fast bowler between 2009 and 2014, featuring prominently in international qualifiers, including the 2011 ICC Women's Cricket World Cup Qualifier. Pioneering Umpiring Path: Transitioning seamlessly into officiating, she joined the ICC's development panel of umpires in 2022 and quickly shattered glass ceilings in the sport.

Historic Milestones:She became the first female Zimbabwean umpire to stand in a Cricket World Cup final when she officiated the inaugural ICC Under-19 Women's T20 World Cup Final between India and England in January 2023. She also made history as the first Zimbabwean woman to stand as an on-field umpire in a men’s domestic fixture (Logan Cup) as well as feature at the senior ICC Women's T20 World Cup level.

Tributes: Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) and the broader international community paid glowing tributes to her professionalism, trailblazing impact, and dedication, noting that her legacy will continue to inspire future generations of women in cricket.

"Sarah served Zimbabwe with distinction, first as a player and then as an umpire whose ability earned her a place on the world stage," ZC chairman Tavengwa Mukuhlani said. "Watching her stand in a World Cup final was a moment of immense pride for our cricket community and our country. She showed young Zimbabwean women that they belong at the highest levels of the game, including in roles where opportunities had long been limited.
