Sri Lanka's Asalanka Focuses on Positives Despite Tough Schedule

Sri Lanka's captain Dasun Shanaka (not Asalanka) is likely looking at the positives despite the ODI series against India clashing with T20 World Cup preparations. The series might serve as valuable experience for younger players. Sri Lanka's focus is on getting the best out of their squad amidst a packed schedule. "We need to start the process of building up our best side for the 2027 World Cup, by that time we need to make sure that most of the players have played at least 60 ODIs - ideally 100, 120. That's the main advantage of playing these ODIs." Sri Lanka's selectors are excited about the potential of allrounders Dhananjaya de Silva and Milan Rathnayake. De Silva's recent T20 intent, fielding, and bowling skills have impressed, while Rathnayake's domestic form has earned him a look-in after a solitary ODI debut. Both could be key players for Sri Lanka. "Milan Rathnayake brings a lot to the table and we need to give him a long run, and give him consistent opportunities. With the 50-over World Cup being played in South Africa, a player like him will be a superb addition for us. A fast-bowling allrounder is what makes the team balance. Dasun Shanaka, reinstated as T20 captain, is focusing on the long game - prep for the 2023 ODI World Cup. He downplayed the recent captaincy controversy, emphasizing squad development and experience for younger players. The series against India is seen as a chance to fine-tune ahead of the big tournament.
