South Australia hold nerve to beat Tasmania in thriller

While Jake Fraser-McGurk continued his sparkling start to the season in South Australia's seven-run One-Day Cup victory over Tasmania, Test offender Jake Weatherald has fallen just shy of a century.

In Tasmania's chase, which ended just shy of on 376 for 8, South Australia posted 383 for 7 from 50 overs and survived a masterclass from Jordan Silk, who made 142 from 106 balls.

In the match on Wednesday at Adelaide's Karen Rolton Oval, SA's Weatherald batted at number three and took 89 balls to score 92.

SA recruit Matthew Gilkes top-scored with an unbeaten 97 while Fraser-McGurk blasted six sixes in his 88 from just 47 balls.

Mitch Owen's assault on Tasmania's run chase began with four sixes, including three in four balls from Nathan McAndrew's second over.

However, Owen, Caleb Jewell, and Test all-rounder Beau Webster all fell in the first nine overs, leaving the visitors with a score of 57 for 3.

Tim Ward and veteran Silk put on 110 runs in 12.2 overs, scoring 61 runs from 45 deliveries.

Silk continued his bold innings after Ward was run out by Ben Manenti's spinner and reached his century in just 79 balls.

Silk scored his highest One-Day Cup run to give Tasmania a chance; they needed 90 runs from the final 10 overs with four wickets left.

He reduced the target to 60 runs in the final seven overs before Henry Thornton bowled him.

Tasmania required 18 from the last over but couldn't reach their target, with Thornton, Manenti and McAndrew taking multiple wickets.

Before that, openers Fraser-McGurk and Mackenzie Harvey got SA's innings off to a fast start with 120 runs in 13.4 overs.

In his extremely aggressive shot, McGurk also hit nine fours, and Harvey scored 41 runs out of 44 balls.

Weatherald, the axed Test opener, hit four sixes and nine fours in his knock.

Gilkes, a former wicketkeeper and batsman for NSW, also destroyed the Tasmanian bowlers with a blistering 97 runs not out in 65 balls, 14 of which were fours.

All of Tasmania's bowlers copped some stick - the most economical was paceman Riley Meredith, while Owen and spinner Matt Kuhnemann took two wickets apiece.
