Shamyl, Abrar hand Quetta Gladiators their first win of the season
To start the PSL 2026 season, Quetta Gladiators defeated Hyderabad Kingsmen by a commanding 40 runs. Quetta chose to bat first, and in their 20 overs, they made a formidable total of 174 for 8, well beyond the reach of a struggling Hyderabad team that could only muster 134 for 8 in response.
After losing in the first round, Quetta got their first points of the season with the win, while the Kingsmen lost their first game of the season. Quetta's innings was defined by a steady rebuilding phase after early jolts. Riley Meredith provided a dream start for Hyderabad, removing the experienced duo of Saud Shakeel and Rilee Rossouw within the first four overs to leave the Gladiators reeling at 25 for 2.
However, the game shifted dramatically as Shamyl Hussain and Hasan Nawaz combined for a vital 89-run partnership for the third wicket. The ship was stabilized by each batter's half-centuries, who played with calm aggression. Hussain struck 54 off 41 balls with three boundaries and as many sixes, while Nawaz contributed 53 off 40 deliveries.
Maheesh Theekshana struck twice in the 15th over, retiring Khawaja Nafay and Ben McDermott for a golden duck, causing the middle order to briefly collapse once more. Despite this, Tom Curran provided the necessary late-innings impetus, smashing an unbeaten 31 from just 18 balls, including three towering sixes. With 3 for 38, Meredith was Hyderabad's favorite bowler, while Akif Javed took two wickets in the final over. Hyderabad's chase got off to a bad start when they lost their first two overs. The Kingsmen are now 17 for 2, and Alzarri Joseph struck with his fourth ball to get rid of the dangerous Saim Ayub.
Abrar Ahmed then got rid of Maaz Sadaqat quickly. Captain Marnus Labuschagne tried to anchor the chase with 23 from 21 balls, but the required run rate climbed steadily. As Quetta's spin duo of Usman Tariq and Abrar Ahmed squeezed the scoring, wickets fell frequently. Particularly effective was Abrar, who completed his four overs with impressive figures of 3 for 23. A late resistance from
Muhammad Irfan Khan Niazi and Hassan Khan gave Hyderabad some hope, as they added 48 runs for the sixth wicket.
Hassan contributed with a brisk 31 in just 10 deliveries, while Irfan scored the most runs with 33 from 25 balls. The tail, on the other hand, was unable to withstand Ahmed Daniyal's dismissal of Hassan, which ended the partnership. Quetta's hold on the game was maintained thanks to Ahmed Daniyal's 2 for 13 in his four overs.
