Scorchers' Beardman Outplays Smith as Perth Reach Grand Final
Mahli Beardman's brilliant spell helped Perth Scorchers secure a 48-run win over Sydney Sixers, booking their spot in the BBL final.
Mahli Beardman's selection in Australia's squad for the T20I series in Pakistan was a surprise, but he's been on the radar for a while, having spent time around the Australian squad in the last 18 months. His impressive performance in the Big Bash League, particularly for Perth Scorchers, earned him a spot in the team. Beardman and Jack Edwards, another uncapped player, were included in the 17-member squad, which is preparing for the T20 World Cup.
Beardman ramped up to the mid-140kph region and bowled a consistent length to trouble the batters. He claimed the best wicket of his short career after a 139kph short delivery hurried onto Smith, who could not clear the fine leg boundary.
Mitchell Starc and Finn Allen put on a show, but it was brief! Starc's first over was eagerly awaited, and he did deliver, taking early wickets. However, Allen's explosive batting took center stage, scoring 49 off 30 balls. The match was played in sweltering heat, with temperatures around 40°C, and a sparse crowd, unlike the usual electric atmosphere at the ground.
Beardman took 3 wickets for 20 runs, including the prized scalp of Steve Smith, who scored 37 off 24 balls. Finn Allen's explosive 49 off 30 balls set up Perth's total of 147/9, but it was Beardman's bowling that proved decisive, as Sydney Sixers were bowled out for 99 in 15 overs.
Perth Scorchers 147 for 9 (Allen 49) beat Sydney Sixers 99 (Smith 37, Beardman 3-20) by 48 runs
