Sam Harper, Tom Rogers star as Melbourne Stars back on winning track
In the second Melbourne Derby, Stars demonstrated their dominance by cruising to an eight-wicket victory over the Renegades, snapping their three-match losing streak. The Stars chased down a target of 167 with 25 balls remaining, motivated by Sam Harper's masterful 84-ball unbeaten century and disciplined bowling.
The Renegades were immediately put under pressure by the Stars' attack after they won the toss and chose to bowl. While opener Josh Brown provided the majority of the home team's resistance, scoring 80 off 50 shots, he lacked sustained support from the opposition. Tim Seifert was bowled by Haris Rauf off Tom Curran's bowling when he fell early for just three runs. Jake Fraser-McGurk scored 17 goals, but one of the most talked-about moments of the afternoon came when he attempted to heave and hit the stadium roof, making it a dead ball under the new rules.
The clinical Stars' rotation made it difficult for the middle order of the Renegades to accelerate. Mohammad Rizwan and Captain Will Sutherland were unable to break the chains, and the Renegades ended their 20-over innings on a subpar 166 for 7. With 3 for 33, Marcus Stoinis was the best bowler, tying the Renegades.
The Stars' pursuit was a demonstration of calculated aggression at its best. Harper anchored the chase with a brilliant 84 not out from 51 balls, which included eight boundaries and four sixes. He was the undisputed hero of the innings. Thomas Rogers, a fellow opener, played a crucial supporting role, scoring 53 runs in 24 deliveries and four maximums of his own. After a dominant 84-run partnership, the pair dropped two in a row.
However, Stars never appeared to be in danger. Harper carried on, scoring 78 runs in just 46 balls to complete an unbroken third-wicket partnership with Glenn Maxwell and get his team past the 16th over. Harper led the charge in this game, and Maxwell added a 20-run, 17-ball home run.
