Rohit, Rickelton break MI first-match jinx after 13 years
In Sunday's Indian Premier League (IPL) match, Mumbai Indians defeated Kolkata Knight Riders by six wickets thanks to quick fifties from Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton. This was Mumbai Indians' first opening round win after 13 seasons.
Rickelton (81 off 43 balls) and Rohit (78 off 38 balls) shared a breezy 148-run opening stand off just 71 balls to chase 221, laying the groundwork for MI's 19.1-over victory with 224 for four. It was also a record chase by MI at home ground.
Rohit's shot had six fours and eight sixes, while Rickelton had four boundaries and eight sixes. Ajinkya Rahane, the captain, hit a fine half-century earlier, but debutant Angkrish Raghuvanshi lit up the stadium with a 29-ball 51 to help KKR score 220 for four.
Raghuvanshi finished his innings with six boundaries and two hits over the fence, while opener Rahane hit 67 off 40 balls with three fours and five sixes. Rinku Singh finished the game with a unbeaten 21-ball 33. Shardul Thakur, who chose to bowl, ended up taking the most wickets for MI (3/39).
KKR may have been pleased with their 220-4 halftime score, their second-highest IPL score against MI. Ajinkya Rahane, who declared at the toss that he had "never seen so much of grass at Wankhede," scored 67 off 40 balls, and another Mumbai youth, Angkrish Raghuvanshi, made 51 off 29 to help KKR reach 220. However, MI barely had any problems against a KKR team that was without several of their frontline seamers, and they won the highest-ever IPL chase at the Wankhede with five balls remaining.
