Raghuvanshi, Rahane guide KKR to a dominant win over SRH
Sunrisers Hyderabad collapsed dramatically following the fall of the opener, and they struggled to find a way back into the contest. Travis Head's blistering 61 off 28 balls was in vain. Ajinkya Rahane and Angkrish Raghuvanshi shared an 84-run partnership, with Raghuvanshi scoring his fifth century in the Indian Premier League, to give Kolkata Knight Riders their third win of the season.
Varun Chakaravarthy, who struck three crucial blows in the middle overs to cause the collapse, led a collective performance with the ball. He made a strong comeback after the spinner was taken apart early on. After breaking his leg in the third over, he was unable to finish his quote because he had already done enough damage. Kartik Tyagi and Sunil Narine provided the necessary support because SRH was unable to stop the slide.
Sunil Narine was given the new ball to bowl the first over in the IPL for the first time in six years. The ploy was obvious - keep the hard-hitting SRH openers in check with balls spinning away from them. Despite Abhishek Sharma's previous two losses to offspinners, many teams have employed this strategy this season, but it hasn't produced the desired results. Abhishek's inside-out shots and Travis Head's pulls made sure the strategy didn't work as well as KKR would have liked. From the two overs, 20 runs were given up by Narine.
Actually, no. In the subsequent over, Abhishek mistimed a pull off Kartik Tyagi, and the first partnership ended on 44. They were put in danger by the pacer, who moved at a high speed and took a lot of bounce off the surface. Even though the openers won by more than 11 runs per over, this is not the usual rate at which they score.
However, Head struck out Cameron Green for three runs in the fifth over, and Ishan Kishan threw Tyagi out for a run in the sixth, allowing SRH to score 71 runs from the Powerplay.
When he rolled to a half-century in the previous game, Travis Head had some luck. However, by the time he reached the landmark and placed Chakaravarthy in the stands below the ground, he had no need of any of that. He did fall to the off-side delivery when he mistimed a pull to the deep midwicket, but by that time, he had already done enough damage (28 runs off 12 against spin) to earn the respect of the bowler, who patted him as he returned to the dugout.
Following Head's dismissal, KKR had just begun to regain some momentum. Narine went back into the attack and won by two runs. Green almost had Klaasen off the second delivery in the following over when he flicked one that was too long on. However, Rinku Singh misjudged the line and ended up stretching more than he should have. As a result, the ball broke through his palms and crossed the ropes. However, Klaasen's stay wasn't very long. Rovman Powell caught him with a superb full-stretch diving catch at deep square leg after he broke a boundary. It was one of the tournament's best catches, and it set up a brief slide.
Tyagi, Chakaravarthy, and Green slipped in four efficient overs, allowing only 22 runs to be scored. The spinner was responsible for the dismissals of Smaran Ravichandran and Aniket Verma. Kishan appeared scratchy during this time and struggled to adjust to the pace of the wicket. In the third over, Chakaravarthy was hit in the leg by a shot from Kishan, and he had to leave the field without scoring all of his runs.
In the 16th over, Narine returned to bowl his final over, cleaning Salil Arora up with a carrom ball, adding to SRH's woes. He became the first international bowler to reach 200 wickets in the IPL as a result. The spinner was attacked by Kishan, who even hit him with a club for a six. However, he misfired one too far off as he attempted to sustain that attack.
The tail wipeout didn't take too long. SRH lost nine wickets for only 60 runs, in the space of 60 balls, to get bundled out for 165. After a team had scored more than 100 runs despite only losing one wicket, it was the fourth-worst batting collapse in the IPL. SRH chose not to bring in an additional batter as an Impact Substitute despite the loss.
However, the real devastation occurred in the fourth over when Finn Allen dispatched Pat Cummins for two boundaries and as many sixes, resulting in the pacer allowing 27 runs, the most he has ever conceded in Twenty20 matches. The opener left with the final ball of the over, but that brief wrath was enough to significantly reduce the required rate and set the stage for a straightforward chase.
Actually, no. Rahane and Angkrish Raghuvanshi had little trouble going through the motions on a surface that provided little support for bowlers and kept the required rate under control. They were beaten at times, and at other times, edges flew just out of the fielder's reach. Despite moving slower in the middle overs than even SRH, it never seemed out of reach, despite not being as dominant as they would have liked. The chase was merely a formality when they left after staging an 84-run stand.
Despite the outcome, the standings remain unchanged. Despite their third victory of the season, KKR continues to languish at number eight, while SRH maintains third place in the standings.
Kolkata Knight Riders will take a longer break after traveling to New Delhi to play Delhi Capitals on Friday (May 8), while SRH will remain in Hyderabad to face the Punjab Kings on Wednesday (May 6).
