Players' boycott delays BPL match amid standoff with BCB

After announcing a boycott in response to what they described as humiliation by the chairman of the Bangladesh Cricket Board's (BCB) finance committee, Najmul Islam, cricketers remained firm in their position as no teams arrived at the venue hours before the scheduled start of the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), the country's lone franchise-based T20 tournament. The Cricketers Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB) made the announcement on January 14 that players would not participate in the BPL if Najmul did not resign prior to the opening game, which was scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on Thursday at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium between Chattogram Royals and Noakhali Express. After a failed negotiation meeting between BCB officials and players' representatives, CWAB also called an impromptu press conference at 1:00 p.m. at a city hotel to announce their position. The meeting was held just a few hours after CWAB gave its ultimatum. Despite the BCB's announcement that it had initiated disciplinary action against Najmul, the most recent development occurred. "The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) expresses once more its regret for the recent offensive remarks made by a Board member. "The BCB wishes to reaffirm its commitment to professionalism, respect for cricketers, and the values that nurture the game of cricket," the BCB stated in a statement. "The BCB acknowledges the concern caused by the remarks. "The BCB is obligated to handle such matters strictly in accordance with its established rules, regulations, and professional guidelines as a constitutional body." The Board has already initiated formal disciplinary proceedings against the member in question in accordance with this responsibility. The individual has been instructed to submit a written response within 48 hours of receiving a show-cause letter. "Based on the outcome of the proceedings, appropriate action will be taken," the statement continued. "The matter will be dealt with through due process." The final phase of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) Twenty20 2026 is currently underway. The BPL "holds a special place in Bangladesh cricket and among fans at home and abroad, as the country's most popular and internationally recognized domestic franchise competition," it stated. "The BCB is of the firm belief that the players are the primary stakeholders, and that they are the lifeblood of the BPL and all cricketing activities that fall under the Board's control. The statement went on to say, "The Board sincerely hopes that the cricketers will continue to demonstrate their professionalism and commitment by supporting the tournament's successful conclusion and ensuring the smooth continuity of the BPL 2026." Subject to the outcome of the CWAB press conference, sources confirmed that the timing of the first BPL match of the day could be pushed back by a few hours.
