PCB eyes January PSL 12 and mid-year tournament to boost income

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and franchise owners have discussed shifting the Pakistan Super League (PSL) to a January window for future editions, following a governing council meeting held in London.

Commercial & Ad Revenue: Media rights holder Walee Technologies floated the proposal because the recent April-May window—which fell right after Ramadan—limited TV advertising budgets and marketing returns for broadcasting partners and franchises.

Scheduling Clash: Moving the tournament to January would put the PSL in direct competition with Australia's Big Bash League (BBL) and South Africa's SA20 for top international player availability, ending the full availability perk enjoyed during the April-May clash with the IPL.

Logistical & Operational Challenges

Severe Winter Weather: Playing in January and February introduces cold temperatures and heavy fog across Punjab venues (Lahore, Multan, and Rawalpindi). A proposed mitigation strategy involves starting the tournament in Karachi and moving north as winter conditions ease.

International Window: Pakistan has a clear home/away international gap from mid-November to March before hosting New Zealand for Tests in March, providing an open calendar window for domestic league play.

Business Diversification Plans

Esports & Secondary Events: To offset dwindling viewership concerns and reach younger audiences, the governing council discussed venturing into Esports and potentially launching a mid-year secondary tournament under existing rights agreements to create additional revenue streams.
