Patel lays the platform, Lawes delivers the knockout for Surrey
Surrey strengthened their qualification hopes for the Metro Bank One-Day Cup knockouts with a dominant 95-run victory over Kent at the Kia Oval.
Patel & Sibley's Opening Platform: Opting to bat first, Surrey got off to a flying start courtesy of a 116-run opening stand between Ryan Patel (73 off 70 balls) and Dom Sibley (53). Rory Burns added a quickfire 33 off 18 balls.
Milnes Fights Back for Kent: Surrey looked set for a score well beyond 300 at 191 for 2, but Matt Milnes (3 for 32) sparked a collapse, taking three late wickets as Surrey lost their final eight wickets for 93 runs to finish at 286.
Worrall & Lawes Set the Tone: Dan Worrall bowled an economical opening spell (0/10 in 6 overs), allowing Tom Lawes (4/40) and Tommy Ealham (3/37) to rip through Kent's top order, reducing them to 88 for 5. Defiant Sixth-Wicket Stand: Jaydn Denly (51) and Ekansh Singh (38) offered brief resistance with an 86-run partnership, but Kent ultimately fell well short, getting bowled out for 191.
In the end, though, Surrey's score proved more than enough as Kent's top order fell away to 88 for 5 in the 24th over. And, after Denly had edged an attempted ramp behind and Ekansh dragged Ealham to midwicket, the end came quickly.
Worrall's Tight Opening Spell: Dan Worrall set the tone early by conceding just 10 runs and bowling three maidens in an economical six-over opening spell.
Lawes Strikes First: Tom Lawes came on at first change and removed Ben Dawkins for 9, who edged behind to Rory Burns for a diving catch.
Spin & Medium-Pace Breakdown: After Kent built a steady foundation at 80 for 2, Tommy Ealham and Adam Thomas triggered a collapse: Ealham stumped Sam Northeast for 24 with a turning offbreak on his third ball. Thomas struck twice in consecutive overs, getting Chris Benjamin caught at square cover and Harry Finch cut directly to Lawes at point.
