Pakistan’s WTC hopes hurt by eight-point over-rate deduction

Penalty: 8 WTC points deducted + 40% match fee fine for entire team. Reason: Pakistan 8 overs short of required over-rate in 1st Test vs Bangladesh in Mirpur/Dhaka. When: Announced by ICC on May 15, 2026. Pakistan have been penalised eight World Test Championship (WTC) points after being found eight overs short of the target in the first Test against Bangladesh in Dhaka, which they lost by 104 runs. The loss of points moved them down a spot in the WTC points table - they are in eighth place - with only four points, the same as ninth-placed West Indies, who have fewer percentage points: 4.17 to Pakistan's 11.11. England moved up as a result, but the win in Dhaka took Bangladesh above England to sixth place. Article 2.22 – Code of Conduct: Players fined 5% of match fee per over short → 8 overs = 40% fine. Article 16.11.2 – WTC playing conditions: Teams lose 1 championship point per over short → 8 overs = 8 points docked. Result: Bangladesh won by 104 runs – their first-ever home Test win vs Pakistan. Target: Pakistan all out for 163 chasing 268. Nahid Rana 5/47 on Day 5. Venue: Shere Bangla National Stadium, Mirpur/Dhaka The sanction was imposed by match referee Jeff Crowe under Article 2.22 of the ICC's code of conduct for players and player support personnel, which deals with minimum over-rate offences. Players are fined 5% of their match fee for every over their side fails to bowl within the allotted time. Teams also lose one WTC point for each over they fail to bowl in time. Australia, the 2021-23 champions, are the WTC leaders at the moment, their seven wins in eight Tests so far giving them 87.50 percentage points. They are followed by New Zealand, champions in the inaugural edition in 2019-21, in second place with 77.78, defending champions South Africa in third with 75.00, Sri Lanka fourth with 66.67, and India in fifth with 48.15. Bottom line: Pakistan’s slow over-rate cost them 40% of match fees and 8 critical WTC points, compounding a historic defeat to Bangladesh and dropping them to 8th in the standings with only 4 points.
