Niamh Holland steers Somerset to victory against Warwickshire
At the Cooper Associates Ground in Taunton, Vitality Blast frontrunners Somerset defeated winless Warwickshire Bears by five wickets, led by Niamh Holland, who scored the most runs.
As the home team chased a victory target of 124 with 3.4 overs remaining, the in-form all-rounder scored 42 from 31 balls, hit five boundaries, and dominated a 54-run third-wicket stand with Anika Learoyd.
As Warwickshire were limited to 123 for 8, spinners Liv Barnes and Chloe Skelton took 2 for 20 and 2 for 21, respectively, to support Somerset's fourth victory in five games. Mary Taylor and Meg Austin scored the most runs for the visitors, who lost wickets frequently and struggled to form partnerships, with 31 each.
Austin set the tone when Warwickshire elected to bat, driving Alex Griffiths twice for four in an over that ended with 14 runs. When it came to spin, Somerset took two wickets in as many overs: Abi Freeborn took a delivery from Skelton and sliced it to point, and Georgia Redmayne played across the line to slow left-armer Barnes and fell off stump for 26.
Austin maintained his dominance, scoring 31 from 26 balls with four boundaries to maintain Midland's goals on track. However, the competent opener gave in to Erin Vukusic's slower ball and missed a drive that was too far off target. The Bears' situation got worse when Skelton ran out former Western Storm teammate Nat Wraith while he was trying to come back for a second, dropping them to 53 for 4.
Barnes convinced Charis Paveley to drive loosely to Learoyd at extra cover as Somerset continued to turn the screw, reducing Warwickshire to 65 for 5 at halftime. Amu Surenkumar was then struck in the wrist by Lola Harris, who was held back by Ruby Davis. Holland then beat Alexa Stonehouse almost exactly the same way, and the Bears fell to 72 for 7.
Mary Taylor remained at large to raise an unbeaten 31 from 32 balls and at least make a partial recovery after Millie Taylor was defeated by the returning Skelton.
Somerset's reply got off to a flying start, Sophie Luff and Bex Odgers accruing six boundaries between them. Odgers hit Stonehouse to deep midwicket and Luff hit Mary Taylor lbw as the Bears fought back with the score at 38.
Learoyd and Holland continued to play at a rapid pace in a powerplay that resulted in 52 runs. They then combined skillful placement with quick running to make the score 89 for 2 at the halfway point. The third wicket pair scored 50 runs from 33 balls to make the outcome certain.
With the score at 92 for 3, Paveley bowled Learoyd for 20. Millie Taylor defeated Holland, who was superbly held by Austin at point, and Katie Jones lost to Georgia Davis as the Bears continued to fight. But after that, Skelton and Griffiths worked together to get the home team over the finish line with plenty of time left.
