New Zealand Levels Series with Thrilling Win, Conway Shines
Devon Conway's brilliant 60 off 49 balls anchored New Zealand's innings, and the bowlers' disciplined performance helped them level the series 1-1 against South Africa. Conway's composed knock, combined with Josh Clarkson's late flourish of 26 off 9 balls, took New Zealand to a competitive 175-6. South Africa's chase got off to a wobbly start, with both openers falling inside the powerplay, and they eventually collapsed to 107 all out, handing New Zealand a 68-run win.
New Zealand's bowlers totally turned the tables on South Africa! Lockie Ferguson and Ben Sears were on fire, taking 6 wickets between them. The spinners, Keshav Maharaj and George Linde, were a bit too expensive, giving away 78 runs in 6 overs. South Africa's batting just couldn't handle the Kiwi pace attack, collapsing to their 10th lowest score in T20Is.
Devon Conway's innings was a masterclass! He anchored New Zealand's chase with a solid 60 off 49 balls, scoring 80% of his runs on the leg side. His first ball was a four, and he hit two sixes, including a slog-sweep off Keshav Maharaj and a launch over long-on off Wiaan Mulder, bringing up his fifty off 39 balls. This is his highest score in 20 T20I innings since February 2024.
South Africa's death bowling misses a trick
With Conway dismissed, and New Zealand 126 for 5 after 16 overs, South Africa had the opportunity to keep the hosts under 160 but their death bowling plans faltered. Nqobani Mokeona, the 19-year old, bowled a good 17th over that cost only seven runs and finished with excellent figures of 0 for 22 in four overs. Gerald Coetzee's final over went for eight runs and brought the wicket of Jimmy Neesham before Ottneil Baartman's last over cost 10 runs.
South Africa's solid start didn't last long. They lost both openers quickly, and Tony de Zorzi's wicket sealed the deal. Cole McConchie's catch and Mitchell Santner's spin did the trick, leaving South Africa 31/3 in the 7th over. McConchie's curse continues !
Keshav Maharaj must be kicking himself. His plan to go wide of the stumps backfired, and Cole McConchie and Josh Clarkson took advantage, scoring 22 runs off his last over. Clarkson's 26* off 9 balls was the icing on the cake. And yeah, having Wiaan Mulder bowl two overs for 14 runs must be a what-if moment for Maharaj.
New Zealand 175 for 6 (Conway 60, Clarkson 26*, Mulder 2-14) beat South Africa 107 (Linde 33, Sears 3-14, Ferguson 3-16) by 68 runs
