New Zealand crush England by 160 runs to seal series win

On the final morning at Trent Bridge, New Zealand put on an impressive performance and bowled England out for 212, winning by 160 runs and winning the series 2-1.

England's hopes of pursuing a formidable target quickly vanished under overcast skies on a day heavily overshadowed by Ben Stokes' sudden international retirement announcement. Despite a spirited, lower-order reanimation led by Jamie Smith's resilient half-century, the visitors ruthlessly chipped away at the remaining wickets to spoil the captain's swansong and register a historic series win on British soil.

England needed another 270 runs to win the series, having scored 103/4 overnight, but the batting order collapsed around a single significant stand by half-centurion Jamie.

In the overcast morning, Joe Root each scored a boundary, but a double blow in the third over decisively tilted the game in New Zealand's favor. Tom Blundell took a sharp, low catch behind the stumps from Nathan Smith to send Emilio Gay back for ten. Root was run out for 18 later in the same over thanks to excellent fielding by Henry Nicholls, putting the hosts in deep trouble at 116/6.

After that, Gus Atkinson joined Jamie and they put together a crucial 75-run stand to keep New Zealand at bay for over an hour in the morning session. Gus played the perfect second fiddle. Jamie continued finding the boundaries and punishing the bad balls, particularly taking on Nathan Smith and Mitchell Santner. However, Santner caught Atkinson plumb in front of the stumps for 19 in the minutes leading up to Lunch, ending his patient 70-ball vigil.

New Zealand needed just three more wickets on the other side of the break to seal the match. Jamie scored his half-century with the first of three consecutive boundaries he smashed off Santner as Nathan continued to work at the English lower order, removing Josh Tongue and Jofra Archer in quick succession.

The left-arm spinner eventually had the last laugh. After being a tad expensive on Day 5 against Jamie's counterattack, Santner wrapped up the match Jamie's dismissal for a fighting 60. Jamie took the final wicket, bundling England out for 212 and securing the significant victory for the visitors.
