Mohammed Shami Breaks Silence on Retirement Rumours and India Ambitions

The Context: Veteran fast bowler Mohammed Shami was omitted from India's squad for the upcoming tour of New Zealand, extending his time away from the national side (having last played during the Champions Trophy in 2025).

Shutting Down Rumours: Despite the selection snubs and fitness debates, Shami firmly dismissed retirement talk and reaffirmed that playing for India remains his primary goal.

In His Own Words: Quoting his statements to The Hindu, Shami emphasized the necessity of having goals in any profession, stating, “Why should I give up hope? The hope should always be there... I don’t deny I have that goal.”

Addressing Fitness and Domestic Choices

Fitness Critics: Shami pushed back against critics who judge his physical readiness purely from the number of overs he bowls in domestic fixtures.

Skipping the Ranji Clash: Addressing his absence from Bengal's Ranji Trophy match against Services, Shami clarified it was a tactical decision rather than a fitness concern. He noted that the pitch heavily favored spin, making it more valuable to give younger fast bowlers game time and experience.

Current Status: Having picked up a four-wicket haul earlier in the domestic season, Shami continues to prepare and wait for his next opportunity when the team calls upon him.

There had been questions about Shami’s fitness because his recent domestic appearances had included relatively short spells of bowling. He rejected the suggestion that outsiders could judge his fitness simply by looking at how many overs he bowled in a match.
