McCann masterclass: 91 steers Notts to dominant win

Nottinghamshire revived their knockout qualification hopes in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup with a six-wicket victory over Northamptonshire at Chesterfield.

Northants' Solid Start: Opting to bat first, Northamptonshire built a competitive total of 259/8. George Bartlett top-scored with 55, supported by Luke Procter (53) and Nathan McSweeney (49).

Notts Bowlers Limit Late Damage: James Hayes (2/51) and Farhan Ahmed (2/51) claimed two wickets each, while medium-pacer Ben Martindale made key breakthroughs to keep the target under 260.

McCann's Career-Best Knock: 19-year-old Freddie McCann anchored the chase with a List A career-best 91 off 90 balls, featuring 11 fours and a six. Comfortable Chase: Haseeb Hameed scored 51 in a 101-run partnership with McCann, before Lyndon James (45*) and Kyle Verreynne saw Notts home with 20 balls to spare.

Hameed made the Steelbacks pay heavily for the drop, reaching 50 from 70 balls but had added only a single before spooning Chahal to midwicket, the third wicket having put on 101.

McCann passed his previous best of 70 in List A cricket and moved into the 90s with his 11th four but could make no further progress, undone leg before attempting another reverse as Chahal grabbed his second. Yet the fifth-wicket pair of James and Kyle Verreynne were on the front foot throughout in adding 69 in 69 balls, James hitting the winning boundary.
