Mahmudullah to join Bangladesh U-19 setup as mentor

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is planning to appoint Mahmudullah as a mentor for the Bangladesh Under-19 squad following the conclusion of the ongoing Dhaka Premier League, the country's traditional List A tournament. Mahmudullah, who has retired from international cricket and is currently active only in domestic competitions, had kept his coaching options open as he began mentoring young cricketers. BCB Game Development chairman Faim Sinha confirmed that Mahmudullah would be attached to the Under-19 setup after completing his stint with Prime Bank Cricketers in the ongoing DPL. "Mahmudullah will join as mentor of the BCB Under-19 squad after the conclusion of the Dhaka Premier League. He will be tagged with the U-19 team when the squad is announced "He will mentor the players. There is a separate coaching staff, but we want to involve him a little and see if he has any observations on the whole system. He can give suggestions for improvement," he said, adding that the board is also considering involving him with the Under-23 squad, which now falls under the BCB's Game Development programme. "We are restructuring a bit. We are extending the game development age to 23, but he will mainly do coaching and mentoring. Additionally, he will assist the players and provide some oversight," he added. In September 2025, Mahmudullah took part in a special batting course organised by the BCB. The three-day programme, conducted by Australian experts Ashley Ross and Ian Renshaw, was attended by around 15 batting coaches and focused on developing coaching skills. At the time, it appeared Mahmudullah was laying the groundwork for a transition into coaching, and his inclusion in the BCB's Game Development Unit in a mentoring capacity seems to be the first step in that direction. In the meantime, Mahmudullah stated that he was prepared to accept the mentoring position as an opportunity to assist Bangladesh cricket. "One day Tamim Iqbal, the BCB president, called me. Then I spoke with him about how, since I'm playing professional cricket, I could find a window to work with the young players and share my experiences with them. We discussed a lot of things. Again, it's a good opportunity for me. I think, Inshallah, if I can share my knowledge and experience and help Bangladesh cricketers, especially the young guys, I'll be more than happy," Mahmudullah told T Sports on Sunday (May 24). "It's a great honour for me because of however many years I have played cricket and whatever we have been able to achieve for Bangladesh cricket. I believe it is high time to give back to Bangladeshi cricket. "That is the primary reason," he stated. "The Bangladesh team have been performing extremely well. A very encouraging sign is that we are winning ODI series, T20 matches, and Test matches. I hope the future generation will become even bigger," he added.
