Madurai Panthers Storm Past Nellai to Qualify for the Playoffs
Madurai Panthers delivered a commanding all-round performance to defeat Nellai Royal Kings by 72 runs and finish atop the TNPL 2026 points table. After posting 198, Madurai’s bowlers dismantled the Nellai chase with regular strikes, with Shoaib Mohammed and Gurjapneet Singh playing key roles in a comprehensive victory that also confirmed their spot in Playoffs.
Madurai was put on the back foot by Nellai's new-ball attack, which included Emmanuel Cherian's three-wicket burst. After that, Hari Ragavendra and Shoaib Mohammed rebuilt the innings with a 60-run partnership before Ragavendra was out for 35 by Sachin Rathi. After that, Shoaib scored 65 for his first TNPL fifty, and Atheeq Ur Rahman's final half-century helped Madurai reach 198, giving Nellai a target of 199.
Madurai Panthers made an immediate impact with the ball as Shoaib Mohammed carried his fine form into the second innings, dismissing both Nellai Royal Kings openers inside the powerplay to give Madurai the ideal start in their defence of 198.
P Vignesh then added to Nellai’s woes by removing Mukilesh, leaving Nellai under mounting pressure. However, Ajitesh showed composure amid the setbacks, taking responsibility for the chase and bringing up a well-earned half-century to keep Nellai’s hopes alive.
At the other end, the wickets kept falling, and Ajitesh was left with a lot of the blame. With a quick delivery, Gurjapneet Singh struck at the right time, dismissing the set batter Ajitesh.
Muhammed Adnan Khan's removal by Gurjapneet further harmed Nellai Royal Kings' chances of making the playoffs.
Madurai went on to secure a 72-run victory and finish atop the points table. Madurai Panthers will face Trichy Grand Cholas in Qualifier 1, while Vida Kovai Kings and iDream Tiruppur Tamizhans will meet in the Eliminator.
Reflecting on the loss, N S Harish said - It’s disappointing to miss out on the playoffs. The pitch slowed down after the rain, but the opposition bowled well at the death. We need to address our recurring batting collapses, as losing four quick wickets from 104/6 cost us the game.
Captain Anirudh Sita Ram reflected on the victory, saying, "Very happy and proud of the way we played in this must-win game." We demonstrated great character and successfully carried out our plans, particularly in light of Nellai's difficulties with spin. We need to carry this momentum into the playoffs.
Shoaib Mohammed, the match winner, stated, "I kept believing in myself, the management, and head coach K." B. Arun Karthik kept backing me. I’m happy to contribute to the team’s success. My job is to bat deep and use the ball sparingly throughout the innings. Tamil Nadu feels like home, and I love playing in Chennai.
