Litchfield, spinners guide Australia to big win over South Africa

Saturday marked the beginning of Australia's 2026 T20 World Cup campaign with a commanding 65-run victory over South Africa. Despite Old Trafford's reputation as a chasing ground, Australia chose to bat first on a used surface and went with a spin-heavy attack to defend their 172 runs. Phoebe Litchfield's aggressive fifty in an innings in which South Africa prevented them from maintaining their momentum with regular strikes contributed to Australia's victory total. However, as the track slowed down even more, Australia's four-pronged spin attack was too much for South Africa, who managed only 107 runs in response after their skipper's 44 and two fatal collapses.

With the bat, Australia did not get off to the best start. Marizanne Kapp struck out Georgia Voll for a duck in the first over, and Shabnim Ismail struck out opener Beth Mooney for seven, leaving them at 24 for 2. Phoebe Litchfield, on the other hand, turned the tide with a stunning half-century of counterattacking.

Litchfield raced to 50 off just 24 deliveries, smashing a flurry of boundaries and a six, before losing to Ayabonga Khaka immediately after the milestone. She had done the heavy lifting for Australia throughout her stay. At 62 for 4, Australia were in trouble when Ashleigh Gardner was run out by Nonkululeko Mlaba just two balls later.

Ellyse Perry and Georgia Wareham, who collaborated on a crucial 58-run partnership, served as the recovery's driving force. Before Wareham's aggressive cameo ended, a sharp catch by Laura Wolvaardt off Nadine de Klerk ended her stay with 32 from 22 balls. Before being bowled by Mlaba, Perry anchored the middle order with a solid 36 off 26 balls. Annabel Sutherland, who struck 21 off 14 balls, and Nicola Carey, who took 13 not out in 11, helped Australia reach 170-runs despite losing wickets late in the game, proving once more their depth.

South Africa's response got off to a bad start. In the very first over, Captain Sophie Molineux struck, stranding Sune Luus LBW for one. The Proteas were left reeling at 7 for 2 when Kim Garth defeated Annerie Dercksen for four in the next over. While Nadine de Klerk, promoted to no. 4, provided a brief counterattack with two sixes in her 25, Wolvaardt attempted to steady the ship at one end. Wareham, on the other hand, dismantled De Klerk by cleaning him up with wrist-spin, breaking the firm partnership.

With a 34-run stand with Kapp, Wolvaardt attempted to restart the chase once more. However, at 82/4, South Africa was in trouble due to a run-out against the flow of play. South Africa's waning hopes were dashed by Molineux, who got rid of Wolvaardt to cause a 6 for 11 collapse at the end. What proved fatal was the mounting asking-rate. With the required rate increasing to 12, Wolvaardt hit Molineux for an inside-out six over long-off. However, additional risks had to be taken. Wolvaardt tried another inside-out shot, but this time he found more cover, and he died in the process.

After that, the Australian spinners only needed three more overs to get the South Africans out for just 107 and boost their NRR. In the 15th over, King sent Kayla Reyneke and Sinalo Jafta back. Ash Gardner caught Shabnim Ismail LBW, and Wareham finished the job with two more in the next over, including Tryon's.
