KKR Search for Lift vs High-Flying GT, Pathirana Remains Absent

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) come to Ahmedabad knowing anything other than a win will put them in do-or-die territory. And we are not even close to the competition's halfway stage. Overseas flops: Finn Allen and Cameron Green were meant to be match-winners. Both have been ghosts. When your two big-money overseas picks combine for minimal impact, your 4-foreigner balance collapses. Indian core misfiring: Rinku Singh and Ramandeep Singh were retained as capped finishers/hitters. Neither has found rhythm. Rinku especially looks a shadow of his 2023 self. Muddled thinking: The Narine-opener vs CSK to block Akeal Hosein is clever in isolation, but it cost them Ajinkya Rahane’s powerplay value. Rahane’s been their best PP batter — strike rate 150+ in first 6 overs this season — and you shunted him to 4 where he faced spin on a slow track. That’s solving one problem by creating another. The bowling issues they started their season with have eased out with Narine regaining his magic touch and the pair of Kartik Tyagi and Vaibhav Arora appearing more settled, but they still need Varun Chakravarthy to bring out his best game. The opportunity to earn points is running out for KKR, and against hosts Gujarat Titans (GT), who are brimming with confidence after a sluggish start, the task won't be easy. Shubman Gill and B Sai Sudharsan are on their way to their fluent best while Jos Buttler has regained the form he lost at the T20 World Cup. Prasidh Krishna's short-and-slow deliveries have reined in opposition batters in while Rashid Khan has found his mojo again after a forgettable 2025. The hosts enter the game looking to complete a hat-trick of wins, and another two points will bring them closer to the top four. The trick: Slow-and-short deliveries into the pitch. Batters expect pace on, he takes it off. On Ahmedabad’s big square boundaries, those mishits don’t clear the rope — they go to deep midwicket’s hands. Impact: Key role in both GT wins. Joint-highest wicket-taker this season, and he’s outbowled Siraj and Rabada for GT. That’s not hype, that’s output. Matchup vs KKR: A middle order low on confidence, struggling with tempo. Prasidh’s cutters and heavy balls at 7-15 overs could be carnage if KKR don’t commit to either attack or rotate. This will be the first game on pitch no. 6 at Narendra Modi Stadium. During the T20 World Cup, it was a superb wicket to bat on with pacers generating extra bounce if they hit the deck hard. There's a bit of swing early but it fades equally quickly. Spinners should not expect much help. Win toss, chase total should be the default.
