Katich Replaces Voges as Scorchers Head Coach for Global Super League

Simon Katich will be taking over as the interim head coach of Perth Scorchers for the Global Super League (GSL) 2026, replacing Adam Voges, who is currently serving as the assistant coach of The Hundred's Trent Rockets. They are also expected to compete as 'Perth Scorchers XI' for contractual reasons, as Hobart Hurricanes did last year. Hurricanes did not have Australia T20 players Nathan Ellis and Tim David available last year as both were held out of the tournament to prepare for Australia's T20 tour of the Caribbean. The league may also double as a networking opportunity for Scorchers and Western Australia Cricket Association officials. Cricket Australia is strongly considering privatising the BBL by selling stakes in teams - as the ECB did with the Hundred last year - and Scorchers' on-field success and ability to draw huge crowds in Perth make them an attractive asset to potential investors. The Global Super League (GSL) has indeed received backing from the Guyanese government, but it's facing criticism from climate activists who claim it's being used as a "sportswashing vehicle" by ExxonMobil, the title sponsor. Critics argue that ExxonMobil is using the tournament to improve its image while continuing to contribute to climate change. ExxonMobil has a significant presence in Guyana, with offshore drilling projects that have brought in billions of dollars in revenue and royalties for the country. However, some argue that the deal is exploitative, with Guyana receiving only a fraction of the profits. In fact, a Global Witness report alleged that ExxonMobil's deal could deprive Guyana of up to $55 billion in revenue. The Guyanese government, on the other hand, sees the GSL as an opportunity to diversify its economy and promote sports tourism. The tournament is expected to bring in significant revenue and create jobs, which could benefit the local community. Katich, a former Australian cricketer, has a strong coaching background, having previously led teams like the Sydney Sixers and worked with franchises like Kolkata Knight Riders. The Scorchers, who won the Big Bash League (BBL) title last year, will be looking to make a strong impression in the GSL 2026 under Katich's leadership.
