Jhye Richardson targets Test comeback as he enters his 30s

Two days before the first official Test between Australia A and India A in Puducherry, Jhye Richardson turns 30. Richardson is aware of the perilous nature of being a fast bowler in top-flight cricket after sustaining a number of injuries over the course of his career and only participating in four Test matches and 33 white-ball internationals since making his international debut in 2017.

Richardson also recently lost his central contract with Australia. Despite this setback and concerns about his career, he still enjoys running in and bowling quickly.

On the sidelines of a BBL event in Chennai, Richardson said, "It [turning 30] is quite scary knowing careers can end abruptly," before joining the Australia A team. "But I still feel strong in myself and I'm enjoying the game and playing for my country. I don't care if I'm a senior or junior bowler as long as I'm having fun playing cricket."

Richardson is committed to playing Test cricket, whether he is contracted or not, and he is now focused on winning the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in India the following year.

Richardson stated, "That's always the plan - to play Test cricket." I dream of playing Test cricket. Again, I've played a few games and experienced some Test cricket, but shoulder and other issues have limited my participation.

"The Border-Gavaskar Trophy always appears in the distance. This year, my attitude is to simply stay where I am. That will take place right now in Chennai, followed by two four-day matches against India A in Puducherry. I hope to win those two games, and eventually, if I perform well, I will be able to play Test cricket again."

Richardson last played a Test at the MCG in December 2025, when he pinned Joe Root with an inswinger during the Ashes. He conspired against Root in the Ashes, but when he played for Yorkshire in his first county match, he teamed up with him, preparing him for the upcoming red-ball grind in India.

Richardson said, "Joe is amazing off the field." He is one of the world's best players. However, some of the conversations we have off the field do not even mention cricket. He is very smart and gives his words a lot of thought.

Therefore, I would love to return next year and had a lot of fun with Joe. Obviously, playing against him in the Ashes and then getting to know him a little better off the field was a great experience."

Richardson's performance in county cricket was not particularly impressive; he took six wickets in seven innings at an average of 66.33, but his shoulder, which had previously afflicted him, performed well and also passed the test in the Global Super League in Guyana, where he played for Perth Scorchers.

"Injuries over the past few years... Richardson stated, "I haven't had a long string of games together." "The plan was to finish the season strongly, play some county cricket, win some games there, and then get ready for the GSL, which thankfully I've been able to do so far.

"Then coming back with some new staff members, including the new head coach Beau Casson and the new S&C (Strength and Conditioning) coach, who have added a nice twist to the situation. He played for the West Coast Eagles for 12 years and comes from the AFL. He has entered and pushed us extremely hard.

George Bailey, chair of the selectors, questioned earlier this month whether Richardson could return to speeds above 140 kph, which he was capable of when he was younger. However, he emphasized that this would not prevent him from competing for international cricket.

Adam Voges, who was Richardson's coach at WA and continues to be his coach at Scorchers in the BBL, believes that Richardson is fitter than he was before.

Voges stated, "I think I'm really excited and optimistic for Jhye" in advance of the new season. "He's had his problems with injury and his body, but when I look at him right now, he probably looks as fit and strong as I've ever seen him. And I believe that will present him with an excellent opportunity. The country stint, GSL, and the upcoming Australia A tour... Therefore, let's hope we get to see a really good Jhye.

"Because we all know how many Test matches Australia will play in the next 18 months, and I think Jhye Richardson, who is healthy and ready to play, can definitely be a part of that group. However, if we're talking about this fixture, which is the BBL opener, he will lead our attack in December, which is an extremely exciting proposition for us.

When Richardson returns to India for the BBL season-opener in Chennai on December 12, he hopes to reacquaint himself with the Indian audience and conditions. His last appearance in the country was for Delhi Capitals in the IPL 2024.

Richardson stated, "We all know how much India loves its cricket." "Hopefully we can recreate something with that here because the stadiums are always packed and extremely loud. In an effort to persuade Chennai to support the Scorchers, we might need to make some positive contacts there.
