Jaiswal, Asitha Fernando penalised with fines after on-field altercation in Colombo Test

As a result of their on-field altercation on Day 1 of the ongoing second Test in Colombo's Sinhalese Sports Club, India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sri Lanka pacer Asitha Fernando received a demerit point and a fine equal to 25% of their match fees.

Following Jaiswal's dismissal of Fernando in the 17th over of India's first innings, the incident occurred. Jaiswal turned around to confront the bowler after he seemed to give the opener a send-off while celebrating with his teammates. Before Jaiswal returned to the pavilion, the Sri Lankan players calmed down after the two players made head contact.

A statement from the International Cricket Council (ICC) confirmed that the players had committed a Level 1 offense in violation of Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which states that they had engaged in "inappropriate physical contact with a Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire, Match Referee or any other person (including a spectator during an International Match)."

The two players accepted the sanctions that Andy Pycroft, the match referee, had suggested, so there was no need for a formal hearing. The demerit point sanctioned was the first against both Jaiswal and Fernando’s name over the last 24 months. A 24-month match ban and the conversion of four or more demerit points into suspension points are the consequences.

Jaiswal got off to a positive start by playing to his stumps for 45. It was the first of Fernando's four wickets thus far, and India's score was 475/8 on a rain-shortened second day.
