Ireland’s Home Test a Novelty, NZ Target Form Ahead of Big Series

First-ever Test: This is the first Test between Ireland and New Zealand in history. Only Ireland’s 13th Test since gaining Test status in 2017. 4-day Test: Scheduled May 27-30, 2026 at Stormont, Belfast. Only Ireland’s second Test at Stormont after beating Zimbabwe there in 2024. Expectations, as a result, are modest. There is no serious sense of which players have red-ball form leading in. And although for New Zealand, this is part of their build-up to a significant series against England, Ireland have no Tests scheduled for the remainder of their summer. As Ireland players no longer feature significantly in the County Championship, and as Ireland's system does not feature red-ball cricket at even club level, the hosts have significant challenges to overcome. Captain: Andrew Balbirnie leads for the 10th time in Tests. Only player to feature in all 12 Irish Tests so far. Missing key players: Paul Stirling (calf), Josh Little, Barry McCarthy (ACL, out until 2027), Gavin Hoey, Jordan Neill all ruled out injured. Four uncapped: Jake Egan, Tom Mayes, Liam McCarthy, Reuben Wilson in line for debuts. Squad: Balbirnie (c), Mark Adair, Curtis Campher, Cade Carmichael, Stephen Doheny, Jake Egan, Matthew Humphreys, Tom Mayes, Andrew McBrine, Liam McCarthy, Harry Tector, Lorcan Tucker, Reuben Wilson, Craig Young Why they’re here: NZ are using this Test to “prepare for a three-Test series against England, beginning at Lord’s on June 4”. They “seek red-ball rhythm” after limited recent long-form cricket. Squad: Led by Tom Latham, includes Kane Williamson, Devon Conway, Rachin Ravindra, Daryl Mitchell. Pace boosted by returns of Kyle Jamieson (first Test since Feb 2024) and Will O’Rourke WTC context: NZ sit 2nd in ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 with 77.78% points. Tucker is 122 runs clear of the next-best batter (McBrine) on Ireland's top Test run-scorers' list, with 703 runs. He has made 452 of those runs at No. 6, but has played only one of his nine Tests at home. Infrequent Tests: Ireland have no domestic first-class cricket for 2nd consecutive season. Cricket Ireland says “without sufficient finances, not possible for us to play more Tests”. Balbirnie: “It’s not every day you get to play against these guys in this format”. Wants players to “enjoy the occasion and express themselves”. Challenge needed: Coach Andy Balbirnie noted “It’s not much benefit for the tourists to have things wrapped up inside two days”. Rachin Ravindra: Says IPL experience with KKR and training keeps him red-ball ready despite limited games. Bottom line: A landmark home Test for Ireland against a WTC contender. For Ireland, it’s a rare chance in whites with a depleted squad and 4 debutants. For NZ, it’s a vital tune-up before England to “seek red-ball rhythm”.
