Inquiry Begins Into Bangladesh’s T20 World Cup 2026 Withdrawal

Jan 3, 2026: BCCI directed Kolkata Knight Riders to remove Mustafizur Rahman from IPL 2026 squad, citing “unspecified reason” amid strained India-Bangladesh diplomatic relationsJan 4: Then Sports Adviser Asif Nazrul posted on Facebook asking BCB to request ICC move Bangladesh’s World Cup matches from India to Sri Lanka, saying “where a Bangladeshi cricketer cannot play in India... the entire team cannot feel safe” BCB request: Formally asked ICC to shift matches to Sri Lanka. ICC refusal: Rejected the request, kept India fixtures as scheduled. Government order: Bangladesh’s interim govt directed BCB to pull out, citing “security concerns” for players, staff, and media. Pakistan solidarity: Pakistan also announced on Feb 1 they would not play India on Feb 15. The sports ministry made an announcement on Monday that additional secretary Dr AKM Wali Ullah will head the committee that includes chief selector Habibul Bashar, the former Bangladesh captain, and Faisal Dastagir. The trio has been asked to look into all matters related to Bangladesh not sending a team to the T20 World Cup. They will be expected to submit a report within 15 working days. BCB board sacked: National Sports Council dissolved Aminul Islam-led BCB on April 7, citing T20 World Cup fiasco Ad-hoc committee: Tamim Iqbal appointed president to run BCB until elections in 90 days. Govt vs BCB blame game: Former assistant coach Mohammad Salahuddin slammed ex-sports adviser Nazrul for lying, saying players “went into coma mentally for five days”. No penalty: ICC confirmed Bangladesh won’t face financial, sporting, or administrative punishment. Future event: Bangladesh will host an ICC event before the 2031 ODI World Cup, which they co-host with India. Bottom line: After Mustafizur’s IPL exit triggered a diplomatic row, Bangladesh pulled out of the T20 World Cup when ICC refused to move their games from India. The government now wants to know if it was avoidable, while BCB leadership has already been overhauled. The committee reports back by end of May.
