India Fast Bowler Mohammed Shami Retires from Test Cricket

Test Retirement: India fast bowler Mohammed Shami has announced his retirement from Test cricket, ending a 13-year red-ball international career. Timing & Socials: He made the announcement on Instagram on November 6, exactly 13 years to the day since his Test debut against the West Indies in 2013.

Shami wraps up with an average of 27.71 and a strike rate of 50.2. In India, he averaged 22.1 and struck once every 42.6 balls. In all, only three Indian bowlers have bettered his strike rate at home. Shami hasn't played any international cricket since the Champions Trophy final in March 2025. Fast bowlers often have to contend with their bodies breaking down and the team management started to look beyond him.

White-Ball Continuation: Shami clarified that while he is stepping away from international Tests, he will continue playing white-ball cricket, including the IPL (where he plays for Lucknow Super Giants) and domestic cricket, and will play multi-day domestic fixtures if needed for fitness.

Career Statistics & Highlights

Wicket Tally: Shami finishes his career with 229 wickets from 64 Tests at an average of 27.71 and a strike rate of 50.2, placing him just outside India's top five most successful fast bowlers in history.

Home Dominance: Despite being a seamer, he excelled heavily in home conditions, averaging 22.1 with a strike rate of 42.6 (one of the best strike rates for Indian bowlers at home). India won 31 of the 64 Tests he played and never lost a home series during his tenure.

Bowling Style: Renowned for his upright seam and wicket-to-wicket accuracy, nearly 45% of his Test dismissals were either bowled or lbw. His final red-ball appearance for India came in the World Test Championship final in June 2023.

Recent Context & Domestic Status

Absence from Team: Shami had not played international cricket since the Champions Trophy final in March 2025, as recurring injuries led the team management to look toward younger options.

Domestic Stint: Having switched representation to Bengal early in his career, he recently played in their Ranji Trophy match earlier in the week.
