Hollie Armitage stars as Durham finish campaign with a win

An excellent century from Hollie Armitage helped Durham close their Metro Bank One Day Cup campaign with a four-wicket victory over Warwickshire.

Durham responded with a string of wickets, but the Bears got off to a good start with a 79-run partnership. After that, Katie George scored a classy century, giving Warwickshire a total of 279 for 8.

Durham's 280-run chase began with the loss of both openers, but captain Armitage, aided by half-centurion Bess Heath, responded with her ninth List A hundred to get Durham to their target with four wickets remaining.

Prior to the game, neither team had been able to advance to the knockout stages of the One Day Cup, but pride was at stake. Durham chose to bowl after winning the toss, but Warwickshire's Nat Wraith and Chloe Brewer, the team's opening pair, got the visitors off to a strong start.

Both openers were afforded a second life, with Harriet Robson and Trudy Johnson dropping catches off the bowling of Lauren Filer. Brewer and Wraith's partnership then passed fifty within the powerplay.

Mady Villiers then dismissed the aggressive Wraith for a fluent 48 after she was caught at mid-off. Brewer was then lbw to Katie Levick and Brooke Halliday was run out as Durham launched a fightback.

In the middle, George and Charis Pavely worked together, with the former being the aggressor as she reached fifty for the sixth time this season.

The Bears continued to build through Pavely and George, who accelerated the scoring in the final stages of the innings. Filer responded in style, picking up the wickets of Pavely, Sophie Beech and Em Arlott.

George, on the other hand, continued at the crease and scored her second century of the season. Eleanor Larosa picked up the wickets of Mary Taylor and Alexa Stonehouse, but George remained unbeaten as Warwickshire set Durham 280 to win.

Durham's chase got off to a terrible start when Stonehouse caught Danni Collins, and George made a great catch. When Robson hit one to the fielder on the leg-side boundary, Stonehouse took her second wicket.

When Phoebe Brett caught Villers at midfield, she was the next Durham batter to be thrown out. Armitage remained at the crease and made a tidy half-century, with any hopes of a home win resting on her shoulders.

As Durham attempted to make inroads into the Warwickshire target, Thompson joined Armitage in the middle and the two of them formed a fifty-one partnership.

Arlott defeated Thompson just as it appeared that the hosts were having a good time. However, Warwickshire was desperate for a breakthrough, so Armitage and Heath joined forces and chipped away.

Armitage made his second hundred of the season to help Durham win, and Heath, an entrepreneur, reached fifty. Despite Armitage's dismissal and Heath's late takedown by Pavely, the hosts prevailed.
