Higher Seeding Sends Bangladesh to Asian Games Semi-Finals Against Pakistan

Bangladesh have qualified for the semi-finals of the 2026 Asian Games men’s T20 cricket tournament, setting up a blockbuster clash against rivals Pakistan after their fourth quarter-final against Malaysia was abandoned without a ball bowled in Nisshin, Japan.

Clean Sweep of Quarter-Final Washouts: Persistent heavy rainfall at Korogi Sports Park claimed all four quarter-final matches across Monday and Tuesday. Not a single ball was bowled, nor was a toss made, in any of the four scheduled fixtures.  

Seeding Rule Advantage: Under tournament regulations, higher-seeded Bangladesh (bypassing the group stage as one of Asia's top-ranked sides) automatically advanced over Malaysia.  

Heartbreak for Lower Seeds: The rain-outs capped off a frustrating knockout round for group-stage qualifiers Malaysia, Nepal, Hong Kong, and Afghanistan, all of whom were eliminated purely due to tournament seeding rules without getting a chance to play.  

The Semi-Final Lineup:

1st Semi-Final: Bangladesh vs. Pakistan (Thursday, October 1) | 2nd Semi-Final: India vs. Sri Lanka (Thursday, October 1)  

Medal Matches: The winners will advance to the Gold Medal match on Saturday, October 3, while the losing semi-finalists will compete for the Bronze Medal on the same day.

In the last edition (2023), Bangladesh had lost to India in the semi-final but won the third-place playoff against Pakistan to take home the bronze medal. They had won the bronze in 2014 as well and Bangladesh's best finish was winning the gold medal in 2010, when they beat Afghanistan in the final.
