Healy's Final Innings Ends in Heartbreak as Queensland Snatches WNCL Win
Queensland has clinched the WNCL title, narrowly denying Alyssa Healy a farewell win. Healy, the Australian cricket legend, was bidding for a championship sendoff, but Queensland's determination proved too strong. Healy had a fantastic final match, scoring 64 from 63 balls for NSW Breakers.
Playing her last competitive match, Healy hit 64 off 63 deliveries to give NSW hope, before the storms struck shortly after her dismissal with NSW 129 for 1.
The Breakers needed 91 off nine overs when play resumed, but when Jess Jonassen helped run out Tahlia Wilson (76) and had Katie Mack (27) caught in the deep, the chase faltered.
What a finish! Queensland's win is extra special for Jess Jonassen, who's been part of the team for 17-18 years. She wasn't around for their 2020-21 title, so this one's a cherry on top. Jonassen's all smiles now, and rightly so - that clutch final over was heart-stopping!
Redmayne and Harris were on fire ! NSW's early wickets didn't faze them - they turned the game around with a massive partnership. Redmayne's 4th century in a WNCL season is a record, and Harris's power-hitting was unstoppable.
"I love batting with her, it's just so easy," said Wilson, who will on Monday fly to West Indies to be Australia's back-up wicketkeeper following Healy's retirement. "I've looked up to her since I was little, so now to be able to play with her and finish off her last innings with her, it's pretty special to think about."
Even when the former Australia captain was caught cutting Charlie Knott, NSW looked likely to take victory, with damaging storms hitting Sydney and the Breakers six runs ahead on DLS.
This thrilling match was a fitting end to Healy's illustrious career, marked by numerous records and accolades, including 7,333 international runs and eight World Cup titles.
