Gordon, Elwiss guide Blaze to a dominant win over Surrey
With a five-wicket victory over Surrey at Trent Bridge, the Blaze consolidated their position at the top of the Metro Bank One-Day Cup table. Kirstie Gordon's side banked a solid victory from a low-scoring game after bowling Surrey out for just 164. Priyanaz Chatterji scored the most runs from number seven with 45 from 68 deliveries, but Gordon took three wickets in seven deliveries to take three for 37.
Georgia Elwiss (76 not out, 95) and Emma Jones (36 not out, 49) calmly guided the Blaze to victory with 93 balls to spare with an unbroken stand of 105. The Blaze then experienced their own difficulties at 61 for five.
After starting the season with three victories, Surrey suffered their third defeat in a row. They urgently require a reboot, but Blaze's momentum continues to grow following their fifth win in six games and fourth in a row. Put in on a grey morning with the floodlights shining brightly, Surrey started briskly, 19 from three overs, but then hit terminal decline.
Paige Scholfield was bowled off stump after missing a drive at Charley Phillips. Tammy Beaumont slickly caught Alice Monaghan at square leg after she pulled at Lucy Higham. Gordon then took three quick wickets, leaving Surrey reeling.
Bryony Smith top-edged to deep square leg and Alice Davidson-Richards and Jemima Spice were bowled through the gate and past a crooked bat respectively.
Surrey had little choice but to retrench from 57 for 5. Before Kira Chathli lost to Josie Groves due to a difficult lbw decision, Chatterji had a score of 28, 58, and added a watchful 36. Less arguable was the lbw call against Aylish Cranston (20, 31) when she missed a sweep at Higham.
Kathryn Bryce caught Chatterji at long-on, and Danielle Gregory was caught at point after Kathryn Bryce caught Chatterji at point. In a diligent innings that at least gave her team something to bowl at, Chatterji only hit two fours. When Phillips yorked Tilly Corteen-Coleman, Surrey had 42 balls left in their innings.
In the first five overs, Surrey's bowlers took three wickets, an impressive response. Corteen-Coleman bowled Kathryn Bryce and Amy Jones, leaving The Blaze 19 for three, and Corteen-Coleman defeated Beaumont, who was caught at slip. Elwiss and Sarah Bryce (29, 39) added 42, but Monaghan drove Surrey back into the game by hitting Bryce and Ella Claridge's off-stumps with consecutive balls.
The Blaze are now 61 for 5, while Surrey was 57 for 5. Emma Jones and Elwiss were unfazed. Elwiss caught Brown for a six to score the 100th run, and the sixth-wicket team added 50 from 75 balls. Even though Surrey bowled well, their batters' underperformance left them with too much work to do, and Elwiss hit her half-century off 72 balls. The sixth-wicket pair won the game comfortably.
