From WBBL to BBL: Mott named Sydney Sixers men’s coach

Matthew Mott has been appointed head coach of the Sydney Sixers for the BBL. As part of the move, he will step down from his WBBL coaching role.

New BBL role Mott takes charge of the Sixers men’s team in the Big Bash League. He leaves his position with the Sixers WBBL side to focus on the BBL job. Mott brings international and domestic experience to the Sixers, having previously coached at the highest level in T20 and ODI cricket. Matthew Mott switches to the men’s side, becoming the new Sydney Sixers BBL coach while vacating his WBBL role.

Mott joined Sixers as WBBL head coach last year and consideration was given to him combining both the men's and women's jobs but the club decided it wanted to continue with distinct roles. The WBBL season currently runs from late October to early December with the BBL starting shortly afterwards and running to the end of January.

Split roles for stability

The Sixers considered having Mott lead both BBL and WBBL, but opted for a "long-term view" to ensure consistent and stable leadership for each team separately. They’re confident in the new WBBL head coach they’ve appointed and will announce that hire in the coming days.

Excited for BBL role

Mott, former Australia Women’s coach and England Men’s white-ball coach, said he’s "incredibly excited" to step into the BBL head coach job after being part of the Sixers "family for a long time. He highlighted the club’s "proud history and winning culture" and wants to build on foundations already set. Having worked closely with the men’s program, he’s seen "first-hand the talent and potential within this playing group."

During his time with Australia's women's team Mott led an era of huge success including back-to-back T20 World Cup titles and the 2022 ODI World Cup. He then moved to take up the England white-ball role with the men's team, when Brendon McCullum started as Test coach, and secured the 2022 T20 World Cup title before losing his job after a poor 2023 ODI World Cup and semi-final exit at the 2024 T20 World Cup.
