Flintoff set for BBL coaching comeback with Thunder

Sydney Thunder are expected to announce Andrew Flintoff as new head coach for BBL 2026-27. Multiple outlets report the deal is being finalized. First overseas franchise role: Flintoff’s first head coach job in a major T20 league outside England. High-profile signing: Seen as a “stunning” move and “coup for the BBL” in its battle to boost popularity. Replaces Trevor Bayliss: Bayliss coached Thunder for 5 seasons but was stood down after they finished last in 2025-26 with just 2 wins. Thunder were on the lookout for a new coach after parting ways with Trevor Bayliss. England's 2019 ODI World Cup winning coach had five years at the helm including reaching the BBL final in 2024-25 but Thunder finished last in the 2023-24 and 2025-26 seasons. England Lions: Head coach since Sept 2024, contracted until Jan 2027The Hundred: Coached Northern Superchargers men’s team for 2 seasons. England setup: Worked as consultant with England’s limited-overs side. BBL playing stint: Played 7 games for Brisbane Heat in 2014/15 season. After Bayliss' departure, Thunder general manager Trent Copeland said that the club would search for a "world-class T20 coach" and have landed on Flintoff. The former England allrounder has been coach of England Lions, England's A side, in the last 12 months including leading the Lions on a tour of Australia last summer that shadowed the Ashes tour. Flintoff also briefly worked with England's white-ball squads as a consultant when Matthew Mott was coach. Flintoff's likely appointment will be the last head coaching role Cricket New South Wales fill across their men's programs after James Hopes was appointed Sydney Sixers BBL coach earlier this month and Brad Haddin took over as NSW state coach after NSW parted ways with Greg Shipperd despite having a year to run on his contract in both roles. Bottom line: Thunder are banking on Flintoff’s star power and recent coaching rise to turn around a struggling franchise. He brings BBL playing experience, Hundred + Lions coaching credentials, and major name recognition to a team that just finished last.
