Financial Aid Considered by ECB to Safeguard England Women’s Test in West Indies

Financial Intervention: The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is open to providing financial support to Cricket West Indies (CWI) to ensure the scheduled 2027 Women's Test match in the Caribbean goes ahead as planned.

Crucial Ashes Warm-Up: ECB Chair Richard Thompson emphasized that playing a Test in the Caribbean is vital preparation for England ahead of the 2027 Women’s Ashes, which kicks off with a Test match at Headingley in June 2027. CWI Budget Pressures: The offer follows recent cost-cutting measures announced by CWI, including contract reductions and high inter-island travel expenses.

Earlier in the year, CWI was forced to cancel a proposed women's Test against Australia due to financial constraints. No Cancellation Talks: The ECB confirmed that there have been no discussions to cancel the match, and the broader multi-format tour—comprising three T20Is and three ODIs in April/May 2027—remains intact.

"It's the biggest recreational summer we've ever had," Thompson said. "I know the sun shone, but at the end of the day, you've still got to have the ability to fulfill those fixtures. I think there's, at the end, far more positive that has come out of this year than negative."

The positive, he added, included the implications of the £520 million cash injection from the ECB's sale of stakes in the eight Hundred franchises. These include the board's newly unveiled schemes, "Cricket for Teachers" and "Secondary Countdown Cricket", both of which he said owed their existence to the monies raised.

"These probably wouldn't have happened without the Hundred. It's an opportunity to reboot the game in a way that we never thought was imaginable."

Historic Fixture: If played, it will mark the first women's Test between England and the West Indies since 1979, and the West Indies Women's first Test match against any opponent since 2004.
