England fined and docked 12 WTC points for slow over rate in Oval Test against NZ

England was penalized 12 World Test Championship (WTC) points and fined 50% of their match fee for maintaining a slow over-rate during the Oval Test against New Zealand, which they lost by 253 runs. After taking into account the time allotments, it was determined that the hosts were 12 overs behind the required rate. In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, Match Referee Andy Pycroft imposed the penalty. For every over that a team fails to win, they must forfeit one Championship point in accordance with Article 16.11.2 of the WTC Playing Conditions. There was no need for a formal hearing because Joe Root, England's interim captain, acknowledged the offense and accepted the proposed punishment. With 38 points and a points percentage of 26.39, England moves up to seventh place in the WTC 2025-27 standings thanks to the penalty. After being penalized two points in the Lord's Test against India last year, it brings their total points lost in this cycle to 14. Since the WTC points deduction was implemented, England has frequently been the target of over-rate penalties. They lost 19 points in the home Ashes series between 2023 and 25 and another three points in the Christchurch Test against New Zealand. The latter prompted captain Ben Stokes to post a sarcastic message on Instagram, accompanied by three shrugging emojis: "Good on you ICC. Finished the game after playing for ten hours. Following the Trent Bridge Test in 2022 and the Brisbane Test in December 2021, England were also penalized eight points.
