Defensive Mindset Causing Overseas Struggles, Admits Towhid Hridoy
The Exit: Stand-in captain Towhid Hridoy candidly admitted that Bangladesh's batting unit has been consistently poor in away matches after they were knocked out of the tri-series following defeats to both Afghanistan and Zimbabwe.
Recent Collapses: Highlighting abject performances during the tournament—such as being bowled out for 172 against Zimbabwe and skittled for just 160 against Afghanistan—Hridoy noted a sharp contrast between their success at home and struggles on the road.
Bangladesh were 28 for 4 by the seventh over against Afghanistan, with Tanzid Hasan and Najmul Hossain Shanto caught behind, Soumya Sarkar bowled off the inside edge and Hridoy caught and bowled. Against Zimbabwe, Tanzid made a good start while the rest crumbled and they were 129 for 7 at one stage.
"The issue is indeed related to mindset. I believe there is room for improvement here," Hridoy said. "As professional players, it is essential that we adapt quickly to conditions. We have lost almost all of our recent away matches. This is an area that truly requires improvement. There is significant room for us to get better.
Key Issues Highlighted by Hridoy
Mindset and Fear: Hridoy pointed out that the core issue is psychological rather than a lack of talent, questioning whether the team plays with the necessary courage in foreign conditions. He noted that a defensive mindset often triggers massive, unrecoverable batting collapses.
Failure to Adapt: Emphasizing the need for professional accountability, Hridoy stressed that international success requires players to adapt quickly to foreign pitches and conditions, something the team has failed to translate into action over the last year-and-a-half.
Lack of Anchors: He remarked that while top teams possess exceptional players who can steer the side out of trouble, Bangladesh currently lacks individuals capable of seizing responsibility during sudden batting slumps.
Home vs. Away Contrast
The Home Record: Hridoy defended the broader state of the team by reminding critics that the same group has secured notable home series wins against major opponents like Australia, New Zealand, and Pakistan. The Away Trend: Statistical data underpins his concerns: Bangladesh have won six and lost three ODIs at home this year, but have managed just one win against four losses on the road, failing to secure an away ODI series victory since May 2023.
