CPL returns to Jamaica in 2026 with new franchise

After a six-year absence, the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) will return to Jamaica in 2026. A media release from the tournament also confirmed that a new Jamaica-based franchise will be introduced, with four matches set to be scheduled at the iconic Sabina Park stadium. CPL matches have not been staged in Jamaica since 2019, and the 2026 season will mark the competition's first appearance on the island following the relocation and rebranding of the Jamaica Tallawahs to Antigua ahead of the 2024 edition. The agreement comes after discussions between the league and the Government of Jamaica, involving the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport and the Ministry of Tourism. Pete Russell, CEO of the CPL, welcomed the development, calling it a significant moment for the tournament. "We are overjoyed to be returning the CPL to Jamaica in 2026. Jamaica is one of the most unique destinations in the region due to its unmistakable energy and rich cricketing history. Fans have been clamoring for the return of a Jamaican franchise and matches at Sabina Park. "We're delighted to be working closely with the Government of Jamaica to make this happen," Russell stated. The return of the tournament, according to Jamaica's Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment, and Sport Olivia Grange, will have an impact beyond cricket. "We are pleased to welcome the Caribbean Premier League back to Jamaica," says the government. Beyond just cricket, this event also promotes our culture on a global scale, supports economic growth, and inspires our youth through sport. She stated, "We look forward to delivering an unforgettable CPL experience rooted in Jamaican excellence in 2026 and hosting players, fans, and partners." Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett described the move as part of a broader strategy to revitalise urban tourism in Kingston, while Cricket West Indies president Dr Kishore Shallow highlighted the significance of restoring a franchise to one of the Caribbean's most storied venues. "The return of CPL cricket to Jamaica delights everyone at Cricket West Indies. The island holds a special place in Caribbean cricket, having produced some of the finest players in our history and generations of passionate supporters who continue to inspire the game. The return of a franchise to Sabina Park is an important moment not only for the tournament but for cricket across the Caribbean," Shallow said. Further details, including the identity of the new franchise and squad composition, are expected to be announced in due course.
