Coppack stars with five-for as Surrey cruise past Warwickshire

In their "must-win" Metro Bank One Day Cup match at the Kia Oval, Surrey defeated Warwickshire for 55 runs, led by Kate Coppack's career-best 5-22.

On a grassy surface that appeared to be dry underneath, Coppack, who is currently on loan from Essex but has already been signed for 2027, ripped through the visitors' front line. Sune Luus, a former South African captain, went 2 for 19 while Alice Monaghan went 3 for 10.

Rachel King finished the match with her second six (41 from 35), and Monaghan remained unbeaten on 16. Surrey reached the modest target in just 62 balls without losing a wicket. Surrey picked up a bonus point for the victory which could yet prove crucial in their chase for final the eliminator spot.

Meg Austin was caught behind for a duck in the opening over, which marked the beginning of Coppack's heroics. Even so, no one anticipated the devastation that ensued.

Amu Surenkumar was trying to sweep when Luus pinned him LBW, and Coppack then took two wickets in one over. Abi Freeborn was sent on her way four balls later after thick edging a ball to King in the gully. Brooke Halliday was deceived by one that appeared to stick in the pitch and took the leading edge before ballooning back to Coppack.

The fit Katie George briefly resisted playing a wristy shot for four, but a beauty from Coppack went between the bat and pad and scattered the stumps, undoing her as well. When Nat Wraith was ruled caught behind from a ball that appeared to hit the batter's helmet, the five-for was complete shortly after.

Even though Coppack finally made way, Monaghan spreadeagled Em Arlott's stumps, making her the fourth Bears batter to leave for a duck. Charis Pavely had also gone by that point without causing any problems for the scorers.

Mary Taylor also lost to Monaghan because the glove that was given to her got caught, and Warwickshire needed the last pair to get past 50.
