Coetzee back in South Africa's ODI squad for Australia series

After being included in the 16-member squad for the three-match series, Gerald Coetzee's ODI hiatus is likely to end against Australia this month. Coetzee hasn't played ODI cricket since the 2023 World Cup because of injury issues. However, he did get some runs in a four-day match against Bangladesh A recently.

Due to the absence of Kagiso Rabada and Nandre Burger, South Africa's pace stocks have already suffered. Due to a problem with his hamstring, Lutho Sipamla, who was selected to compete in the tri-series in Namibia, was dropped. Prenelan Subrayen, Rubin Hermann, and Dewald Brevis were not in South Africa's squad when they last played in an ODI series.

Aiden Markram will only be available to play in the second and third one-day internationals, according to the CSA. Along with veteran David Miller, Tristan Stubbs, who did not play in South Africa's most recent ODI match against India in December, has returned.

The first game of the series is scheduled for September 24 in Durban, with the next two games on September 27 and September 30. Since hosting Pakistan in December 2024, this will be South Africa's first ODI match at home.

The team's head coach, Shukri Conrad, stated, "With the World Cup just over a year away, this series marks an important step in shaping the squad as we build towards the tournament, while also giving those players who are in the frame opportunities when we face Bangladesh and England later in the season." We know precisely the combinations we want and the roles that players need to play.

"From a batting standpoint, we've looked at making sure we have a middle order that can be explosive while also being able to take pressure off and go quite deep in innings. We will place a significant emphasis on this equilibrium. Despite the fact that injury will prevent Kagiso from participating in this series, his absence presents an opportunity for the other players to step up. It's great to have Gerald back in the team, and it seems like he's been bowling quickly.
