Canada Men’s Team Ropes In Monty Desai as Coach

Announced: May 1, 2026 by Cricket Canada. Desai named head coach of Canada men’s national team. Timing: Comes after Canada’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 appearance and ahead of key ICC pathway competitions Context: Part of a “tentative reset” for Cricket Canada amid governance turmoil, corruption allegations, and board shake-ups. Follows removal of ex-president Amjad Bajwa and CEO Salman Khan’s arrest for theft/fraud. Canada lost all their four group-stage games at the 2026 men's T20 World Cup, to Afghanistan, New Zealand, South Africa and UAE, and things got worse for them when, in April, it emerged that the ICC's anti-corruption unit was investigating allegations of corruption at the World Cup, focusing on a game involving Canada. President Arvinder Khosa: “Our foremost priority is to restore Cricket Canada’s prominence through performance, professionalism, and a renewed sense of purpose” Why him: “His experience with Associate nations, most notably Nepal and Afghanistan, demonstrates his ability to transform teams through effective leadership, discipline, and a clear long-term plan” Goal: Build momentum and “achieve greater international consistency” as Canada enters a “pivotal moment”. Governance reset: Appointment lands before “defining May 9 AGM” where reformists aim to wrest control from old guard Squad context: Canada just named 23-year-old Dilpreet Bajwa captain after Nicholas Kirton was removed. Squad selections have drawn scrutiny Challenge: Canada hasn’t played an international since Sept 2025. Next face “heavyweights such as South Africa and New Zealand” . "Canada has a similar opportunity, and my focus will be on building a culture that translates this potential into consistent performances on the international stage." Cricket Canada is using Desai’s track record with Associates to drive a cultural and performance reset after years of mismanagement. With ICC pathway events coming up, they’re betting his experience with Nepal/Afghanistan can unlock Canada’s potential into consistent results.
