Big blow for Sri Lanka: Mendis and Chandimal out, Nissanka unlikely for second Test

Sri Lanka face a major selection crisis ahead of the second Test against India in Colombo, with up to three first-choice batters ruled out or doubtful as they attempt to bounce back from a 1-0 series deficit.

Chandimal Ruled Out via Concussion Protocols: Dinesh Chandimal is automatically unavailable for the second Test due to ICC mandatory seven-day concussion protocols following his injury on Day 4 of the Galle Test.

Mendis Still Sidelined: Kusal Mendis remains out due to a hamstring injury suffered during the early rounds of the Lanka Premier League. Niroshan Dickwella, who replaced him in the squad and scored 80 in the first innings, is expected to retain his spot.

Nissanka Doubtful: Pathum Nissanka is continuing his recovery from June wrist surgery; while closer to fitness than Mendis, he is still experiencing discomfort while batting. Opportunity for Youth: Sri Lanka head coach Gary Kirsten noted that while the injuries present a major setback, they offer a great chance for young domestic players with strong first-class records to step up.

Sooriyabandara's Spot: Concussion substitute Pasindu Sooriyabandara, who made his debut on Day 4 in Galle, could retain his place in the side despite a first-innings duck.

"Kusal Mendis has a proper hamstring injury, and will not be available for a while," Sri Lanka coach Gary Kirsten said. "Dinesh is also not available for the next Test. So we're missing a few guys from that perspective, but it creates a good opportunity for young players to come in and stake their claim. There are players who have got really good first-class records in this country. It's a good opportunity for them."

Sri Lanka have not yet named a squad for the second Test. The squad SLC had named ahead of this series was only for the first Test.
