Bethell, Brook star as England take 1-0 lead in T20I series

Jacob Bethell's unbeaten 76 led England to a four-wicket victory in Manchester despite India's blistering start and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's brave debut at the age of 15. Harry Brook's explosive counterattack set up the chase in the middle overs.

Shreyas Iyer, India's captain, called India's 190/7 score a "phenomenal score" on the field thanks to a 50-run opening stand between Sooryavanshi and Abhishek Sharma, India's youngest player in men's internationals. With a fifty-year stand, Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan rebuilt through the middle. However, India were reduced to 167/6 by England once the ball got old on a ground with large square boundaries, and Tilak Varma's late attack gave the visitors a competitive total to defend. In the end, it wasn't enough, and England won the series 1-0.

England's quicks initially made excellent use of the pitch's pace and bounce to reward hard lengths. Before England tried fuller deliveries to get wickets, Jofra Archer and Josh Tongue repeatedly beat both left-handers. This change backfired right away. For his first international six, Sooryavanshi scooped Archer over fine leg and then launched Tongue over midwicket. As India scored 31 runs in the third and fourth overs, Abhishek punished anything overpitched after a shaky start.

Will Jacks made a breakthrough by stumping Sooryavanshi after luring him out of his crease. Sam Curran then removed Abhishek for a brisk 43 off the final Powerplay ball to restore some equilibrium.

Iyer and Ishan Kishan rebuilt with a 65-run stand in which the T20I captain repeatedly used his feet to upset the lengths of Liam Dawson and Adil Rashid and even took a painful blow to the right hand from Josh Tongue. Kishan, on the other hand, made it through Phil Salt's difficult chance at deep midwicket off Rashid and gradually integrated himself into the innings.

After repeatedly watching Iyer advance, Dawson eventually outwitted him by firing one wider of his hitting arc. Brook's strategic use of Jacks against India's left-handers halted the scoring just as the visitors were about to launch.

Shivam Dube and Kishan were both defeated by Curran's pace changes, and Jacks only gave up 13 runs in his final two overs. Tilak Varma changed the tone of the innings just as 180 appeared out of reach. Varma dismantled Archer in the final over with two towering sixes over the shorter side of the ground and a cleverly carved boundary behind point. Harshit Rana first took advantage of an extra delivery after Tongue's wide with a six. India scored 23 runs in the final seven deliveries to reach a total that appeared to be competitive but never won the match.

The defense of India could hardly have started off better. In the first over, Arshdeep Singh gave away Phil Salt and Jos Buttler for ducks, leaving England at half. Brook crushed Arshdeep for 27 runs in just one over, hitting four boundaries and three sixes for a stunning 39 runs in just 15 balls. Even though a successful review enabled Axar Patel to free the England captain who had been caught down the leg side, Brook's knock had caused the injury.

After that, Bethell took over. As Tom Banton battled the deep fielders, he contributed 83 runs for the fourth wicket, playing second fiddle. Varun Chakaravarthy trapped Will Jacks lbw to briefly revive India's hopes, but the chase turned decisively in the 17th over after Arshdeep returned to dismiss Banton. Ravi Bishnoi overstepped twice in the over, giving Bethell six consecutive free hits before another six and a four completed the 29-run over that nearly won the game.

Bishnoi's 29-run over was the third most expensive by an Indian bowler in the format, making him the first spinner from a Full Member nation to bowl three no-balls in a men's T20I. After the fact, Iyer acknowledged that the no-balls "haunted" India in some way.

Harshit Rana removed Sam Curran late, but Bethell had already brought England close to disaster by that time. He went unbeaten with a score of 76 off 46 as England won the match with one over remaining.
