Beth Mooney replaces Sophie Devine as Perth Scorchers captain
Beth Mooney has taken over from Sophie Devine as the Perth Scorchers captain for the ongoing 12th season of the WBBL, and called the step up "a little bit daunting". Scorchers, who were champions in 2021 when Devine was captain, play Melbourne Renegades at home on Saturday at the WACA.
Mooney left the Brisbane Heat for the Scorchers in 2020, where he has appeared in 80 games.
"Perth and the Scorchers have become a second home to me, and I've been fortunate to play alongside some amazing team-mates and leaders during my time in WA," Mooney said in a statement. "We are extremely proud to represent the state, and we have developed a strong culture both on and off the field.
"Over the past six years, Soph has done an amazing job, and I'll probably ask her questions throughout the season. We're eager to take the field because we have a talented team that is hungry for success, especially after coming up just short in the decider last year."
Devine has been Scorchers' most-capped overseas player with 77 appearances since Mooney moved to Scorchers in the same season. She also led the Scorchers to the final in 2025, where they lost to the Hobart Hurricanes, their fourth time competing for the title.
Head coach Becky Grundy stated, "Soph has been an exceptional leader, our first championship captain, and a huge driver of our fantastic team culture." "I look forward to working closely with her and Beth once more this season as we aim for the club's second championship. We're grateful for the enormous amount she contributed to the role."
"Beth's actions consistently set the standard for those around her, making her an exceptional leader. She is the best person to lead this group because of her experience at the highest level of the game, her competitiveness, professionalism, and genuine concern for her teammates."
Mooney has scored 5600 runs for Heat and Scorchers, more than anyone else in the WBBL. She had won the WBBL championship twice with Heat prior to joining Scorchers, in 2018-19 and 2019-20.
