Ben White announces retirement from representative cricket
Ireland leg spinner Ben White has officially announced his retirement from representative cricket on Wednesday (October 28). White, aged 28, made his debut for Ireland in a T20I in Belfast against South Africa in 2021. His last appearance for his country came in December 2025 against Bangladesh.
White made three Test appearances for Ireland, all of which occurred in 2023. In total, he was capped 43 times across formats for Ireland, with 38 of those appearances coming in T20s.
In a statement, White said, "I'd like to thank Cricket Ireland for giving me the opportunity to fulfill a childhood dream of playing cricket at the highest level and representing my country." "It was definitely not on the bingo card to represent Ireland at three ICC T20 World Cups and play Test cricket, but it’s something I’ll always be incredibly proud of, and I’ll be forever grateful for the experiences and memories I’ve made along the way," the Irish cricketer said.
White also played for Ireland in three ICC Men's T20 World Cup squads (in 2021, 2024, and 2026) and has 41 wickets in international cricket.
I always respond to a retirement like Ben's on these occasions with mixed feelings. On the one hand, I congratulate him on a career to which he has devoted so much time and effort and wish him luck. But on the other hand, I know first-hand how much he put into pursuing his dream of playing for Ireland and am pleased that he achieved over 40 caps for his country and he will be missed around the group," Ireland head coach Gary Wilson said. “Ben will be remembered fondly for his T20 cricket the most, despite his ability to extract bounce and bowl at great pace, which made him a handful.” His inclusion on three T20 World Cup squads is evidence of the respect he received, and he ought to be proud of what he accomplished throughout his career.
