BBL Privatisation Backlash Forces Mike Baird Out as Cricket Australia Chair

Former New South Wales Premier Mike Baird has announced his resignation as Chairman of Cricket Australia (CA) ahead of the board's Annual General Meeting in October 2026. His departure stems directly from a major fallout with Cricket NSW and other state bodies over plans to allow private investment in the Big Bash League (BBL).

Loss of Home State Backing: Baird served on the CA board as New South Wales' designated representative. Following Cricket NSW’s strong opposition to BBL privatisation, the association confirmed it would no longer support his candidacy. Though Baird could have transitioned into an independent director role, he chose to step down, declining to serve without full state backing.

The BBL Privatisation Row: Baird and CA CEO Todd Greenberg spearheaded plans to sell off stakes in BBL clubs to private investors, starting with the Melbourne Renegades for the 2027–28 season. State associations, led by Cricket NSW and Queensland Cricket, fiercely opposed the move, warning that selling off equity would drain vital revenue from grassroots and domestic cricket development.

Interim Leadership Transition: Former Australian Test star David Boon will take over as interim Chairman on October 28 while the board conducts a formal search for a permanent successor.

Baird’s Legacy & Response: Having served six years on the CA board and as chair since February 2023, Baird defended the BBL privatisation strategy as essential for long-term sustainability. He highlighted record financial revenue, profit, and a 40% growth in overall cricket participation during his tenure.
