Barbados Royals renamed as Barbados Tridents ahead of CPL 2026

Prior to the 2026 season, the Caribbean Premier League franchise that served as the foundation for the Barbados Royals will rebrand as the Barbados Tridents. The move follows the announcement of the "One Barbados" partnership between the Barbados government and Royals Sports Group, the Barbados franchise's parent company. When the CPL first started in 2013, one of the six original franchises was the Tridents. They won two titles in 2014 and 2019. The Tridents were renamed Barbados Royals prior to the 2021 season when the Royals Sports Group purchased a majority stake in the team. The team has played under this name for five years, including three seasons in the Women's CPL. A release from the Tridents stated that the three-year One Barbados partnership "intended to be part of a much larger national movement" that highlights the franchise as a "year-round national asset", bringing a public and private entity together with the island country set to celebrate its 60th year of independence on November 30. The Government of Barbados has also agreed in principle to become a minority co-investor in the franchise, but the necessary approvals are still pending. "As we begin to chart the course for our next sixty years, the return of the Barbados Tridents reflects our confidence, pride, and ambition as a nation." Our national identity and self-determination have always been based on cricket. As a result, Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley praised the One Barbados partnership, stating, "It is incredibly fitting that through his partnership, we will see ourselves represented, in our national colors, with a name that speaks to who we are." While the Royals have worn pink, the Tridents will return to wearing black, golden yellow, and ultramarine, Barbados's national colors. However, the team will continue to promote the color pink and will also host a special charity match called "Pink Promise" during the CPL season to raise money for good causes.
