Backing the Veteran: Morne Morkel Urges Bhuvneshwar Kumar to Shut Out the Noise

Backing the Veteran: India bowling coach Morne Morkel has strongly backed Bhuvneshwar Kumar following his challenging return to international cricket, urging the senior fast bowler to "block the expectation factor out" and just focus on being himself.

Tough Start: Bhuvneshwar's comeback—his first international appearance in four years—has seen him concede 49 and 50 runs across his first two T20Is in Christchurch against New Zealand, leaving him with an economy rate of 12.37.

"You're either going to see it as a challenge or you're going to see it as a negative or it's going to let you down. And hopefully we can get those guys in the mental space where they look forward to that challenge. And at the end of the day, you need somebody to put their hand up and bowl into the wind because we can't have four guys bowling with the wind."

Understanding the Comeback Pressures

Limited Prep & Small Margins: Morkel expressed sympathy for the 36-year-old pacer, pointing out that transitioning back to the fine margins of international cricket with limited preparation time—despite stellar back-to-back IPL title-winning seasons with Royal Challengers Bengaluru—is a massive leap.

Finding Rhythm: Stressing that experience is not an issue, Morkel emphasized the importance of allowing Bhuvneshwar time to find his feet without letting external noise or expectations weigh him down.

Tactical Changes & Wellington Conditions

Pace Rotations: India swapped their third quick bowler between the first two games purely for tactical reasons at the venue, with Mayank Yadav making way for Prince Yadav to leverage better death-overs yorker execution.

Dealing with the Wind: Looking ahead to the third T20I in Wellington—noted for its fierce, gusty winds—Morkel joked that players should practice by walking into a powerful house fan, framing the extreme conditions as a mental challenge the team must tackle head-on rather than make excuses for.
